The WORLD's Infamous DICTATORS… and How They Met Their Violent Ends

The World's Infamous Dictators… and How They Met Their Violent Ends

Cut down in the cross-fire between loyalists and rebels, then flung in a truck and executed in front of a baying mob, Gaddafi’s final moments were as brutal as his crimes.
Covered in blood and dirt, he had pleaded for his life - the answer was a bullet to the temple.

So how does it compare to the grisly deaths of other ruthless dictators such as Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Nicolae Ceausescu and Rafael Trujillo? The circumstances varied, but the cold and bloody nature of their last seconds did not.

SADDAM HUSSEIN, December 30, 2006
Seven coils and pre-boiled to take out any stretch.

One thing the U.S. and Iraq do have in common is their style of hangman’s noose.
Saddam Hussein, deposed dictator of Iraq, would have had little time to dwell on such trivia as he stood on the gallows to finally face justice.

The end: Saddam Hussein was hanged by vengeful countrymen after overseeing a brutal regime - his death signalled by a loud crack of his neck

Like Muammar Gaddafi, he too had been found cowering in a grubby bolthole, in December 2003.
As one U.S. military commander said, he was ‘caught like a rat’.

Holed up in an underground chamber little bigger than a coffin, Hussein surrendered without a fight when allied troops cornered him near Tikrit, his birthplace.
Bearded, thin and exhausted, he had been on the run for 250 days.

'Caught like a rat': Saddam Hussein after being tracked down by U.S. forces

On November 5, 2006, he was found guilty of crimes against humanity by the Iraqi Special Tribunal.
He was sentenced to be hanged until dead.

Three months later in Baghdad - at 6am on December 30 – Hussein was led to a platform in a concrete chamber by masked men.
Wearing a white shirt and dark overcoat, he refused a hood and shouted ‘God is great.’

Soldiers taunted him with insults until a judge demanded silence.
As he clutched a copy of the Koran, a noose was placed around his neck – nicely waxed to guarantee a clean slide of the knots.

The trapdoor was released and a loud crack was heard and his neck broke.

Left to swing for several minutes, a doctor was called to listen for a heartbeat.
Saddam was dead.

Suicide: Adolf Hitler is thought to have shot himself in the temple in his Berlin bunker

Blood dripped onto the carpet and the smell of burnt almonds filled the air.
Hitler’s valet was the first on the scene after the sound of a single gunshot was heard coming from the Fuhrer’s study.
Holed up in a Berlin bunker, the date was April 30, 1945.

One of the leader’s most trusted commanders, Field Marshall Keitel, had just told him the soldiers protecting the city would run out of ammunition that night.
Two days earlier, Hitler had married Eva Braun – and she too would take her life as the Russians edged ever closer.
Knowing the end was near, he had meticulously prepared for death, even testing cyanide pills on a dog and her puppies to make sure they worked.
Before retiring to his study, he said farewell to his inner circle.

Then, at around 3.30 that afternoon, the man who had survived numerous assassination attempts took out his Walther PPK pistol and shot himself in the head.
He is said to have sat, sunken on a sofa, with blood oozing from his right temple. According to other accounts, his head was slumped on a table.
Braun chose cyanide (which produces a burned almond smell) and was discovered dead in the same room with her legs drawn up.

In accordance with Hitler’s instructions, SS officers took the corpses outside, poured petrol over them and set them alight.

NICOLAE CEAUSESCU, December 25, 1989
So many soldiers volunteered to shoot Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena that a lottery was held to allocate places.

And on Christmas Day, 1989, after a brief show trial in Bucharest, the couple faced the firing squad of elite paratroopers.
With Communism crumbling around him, the self-proclaimed ‘Genius of the Carpathians’ realised that his days as ruler of a brutally oppressive regime were over.

Paraded in front of the cameras: Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife were put on a show trial before their execution. No mercy: The Ceausescus were led away to be shot as they screamed in protest
He had attempted to flee the country with his wife but they were soon captured by rebel soldiers.
Their trial was held in a bare room, where they were treated with cold contempt.

Accused of crimes ranging from illegal gathering of wealth to genocide, he stood frightened in the dock.
Within 90 minutes, he and Elena were sentenced to death.

At first, they were told they would be shot separately, but they begged to die together – and their final wish was granted.

After the trial they had their hands tied behind their backs with rope, with such force that Elena complained that her arms were breaking.
The soldiers took no pity on them. ‘Nobody will help you now,’ one said.

They were led outside, shouting ‘shame, shame’.
The firing squad were ordered to set their guns to automatic fire.

One paratrooper describes how the first bullets hit Nicolae in the knees, then in his chest, with the next thumping into Elena.
Within seconds they lay dead on the floor, blood flowing along the ground from Elena’s head.

BENITO MUSSOLINI, April 28, 1945
Mussolini made a desperate bid to escape to Switzerland with his mistress Clara Petacci and his fascist entourage, numbering about 15, on April 27, 1945.
But he was stopped by Communist officials and soldiers, despite trying to disguise himself in a German military uniform.

He was shot the following day in the village of Giulino di Mezzegra, along with those travelling with him.

Reviled: The bodies of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, centre, his mistress, Clara Petacci, right, and Achille Starace, former secretary of the Fascist Party, hang by their heels in Milan

Defiant to the last, the deluded leader screamed at the soldier sent to execute him: ‘Shoot me in the chest!’
The soldier wasted no time in firing.
It's believed Mussolini slumped to the floor in agony, still breathing, so the soldier strode up to him and shot him in the chest again.
His body, along with that of his wife and other executed fascists, was taken to Milan and dumped unceremoniously on the ground outside a petrol station in the middle of the night.

There Italians, reviled by the former leader’s regime, took the opportunity to vent their anger on him.
Even in death, they had no respect for him at all.

For hours they spat on him, kicked him, stoned him and battered his body with whatever they could lay their hands on.
The attack was so violent that the dictator’s head was left misshapen.

Bloodied, dishevelled, and bearing agonised grimaces, Mussolini, Clara and other executed fascist were then hung upside down with meat hooks.
Had they been innocents, Italians would have been horrified by what they saw – but this sight was met with jubilation.

They’d lived a life of luxury and wielded enormous power – now their honour was mercilessly torn away from them.

ION ANTONESCU, June 1, 1946
It’s often said that dictators are deluded, tinged with madness – Ion Antonescu then, was perhaps no different, because even while staring down the barrel of a gun, he held his hat aloft.
He had been Romania’s war-time leader and was said to be responsible for the deaths of 400,000 people.

But justice was eventually served in 1946 when he was prosecuted for war crimes, crimes against the peace, and treason.

The sentence was death, and he was dispatched ruthlessly in a field along with three members of his hated regime.
They were dressed in suits and hats but there was nothing respectful about their deaths.

The firing squad unleashed their shots and the four men crumpled in a split second.
To make sure they were dead an officer steps up to each corpse and shoots it several times.

Cold and brutal, just like Antonescu himself.

RAFAEL TRUJILLO, May 30, 1961
Like a scene from a Chicago gangster film, Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo was gunned down as his chauffeur drove him along a dark road.

The first shot didn’t kill him though - he fought back. But the seven men, assigned to take him out on the orders of the nation’s wealthy elite, were determined and quickly overwhelmed him.
Trujillo, also known as El Jefe (The Boss), had presided over a murderous regime for 30 years between 1930 and 1961.

His political weapons were torture and murder.
Several thousand Haitians, for instance, were massacred in 1937 on his say so.

But as history shows, there is only so much the people will take.
His killers blocked his car with theirs and a fierce gun battle ensued.

The armed chauffeur let loose with a volley of shots and Trujillo, despite being hit, carried on firing back.
They were eventually overpowered - the car was left with 60 bullet holes in it - and left lying dead on the road.

Joseph Stalin caused the deaths of over 20million... but he escaped justice

AND THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY...
JOSEPH STALIN
The Russian ruler died in his bed at home near Moscow on March 5, 1953, at the age of 74. He suffered a stroke and had spent four days bedridden before passing away.
Through purges, famine and gulags he is estimated to have been responsible for the deaths of over 20million. Some historians have suggested he could be responsible for over 60million deaths.

The reality - with so few records kept - is no one knows how much damage this dictator truly inflicted on his people.
It is thought that around 14.5million needlessly starved to death and 9.5million were executed in cold blood for opposing his politics.

Stalin was such a ruthless dictator that all of his enemies were murdered. Throughout the 1930s the 'enemies of the people' were murdered - with thousands executed. The purges weakened the army heading into World War II.

The murder of Sergey Kirov, Stalin's rival, in 1934 was the pretext for the fierce repression of Stalin's enemies.
As he grew old, Stalin became increasingly paranoid but he was never himself the victim of the tough 'justice' he meted out.

Top 20 ways to live longer

Living longer is one of the greatest benefits of leading a healthy active lifestyle and life expectancy for both men and women has continued to rise with improvements in diet, awareness and medical care. And to ensure that you are one of those helping boost future life expectancy figures we have prepared a list of 20 great tips to help with putting off the inevitability of death for as long as possible …

1.  Laugh more

Research states that laughter may be beneficial to health. Laughing appears to boost the blood flow (by more than 20 per cent) and researchers say it may reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Laughing has previously been found to help fight infections, relieve hay fever, ease pain and help control diabetes. The positive effect of laughing is thought to last around 30 to 45 minutes.

2.  Adjust sleeping time
Life expectancy may be reduced by sleeping more than eight hours a night. A study found that people who get only six to seven hours sleep a night live longer than those who sleep eight hours or more, or less than four hours.

3.  Eat more garlic

Garlic has been referred to as ‘nature’s antibiotic’. It is a powerful cleanser of the body and regular ingestion promotes a healthy heart and circulation by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. It also helps fight infection and can boost immunity. There is strong evidence to suggest that garlic helps with the prevention of cancers of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum. Those who don’t like the taste of garlic should try the odourless supplements that are available.
4.  Boost your sex life
Having sex between three to four times a week is thought to reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke in half. During sex, the average person maintains their heart rate above 70 per cent of the maximum, making sex a wonderful CV workout! Sex reduces stress, leads to greater contentment and better sleep.

5.  Drink tea

Many research studies support the view that tea is good for your health. Scientists tend to agree that tea, both black and green, may contribute positively to the promotion of health and the prevention of chronic disease. Recent research studies reveal the antioxidants in tea may inhibit the growth of cancer cells, support dental health, increase bone density and strengthen cardiovascular health. According to a study published in Circulation: The Journal of the American Heart Association, heart attack patients who were tea drinkers decreased their risk of death by up to 44 per cent, as compared to non-tea drinkers.

6.  Drink red wine

Any excuse to drink more has got to be good! Recent studies show that drinking around one glass of red wine a day may have certain health benefits by protecting against certain cancers and heart disease, and can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Excessive or binge drinking, however, unfortunately doesn’t produce the same benefits.

7.  Regular self examination

For women this means regularly examining their breasts, and while breast cancer is not unknown among men, males should regularly check their testicles for lumps. It is important to get to know how your body parts normally feel and look, and report any changes, such as a lump, to your doctor. More often than not, lumps prove to be benign, and these types of cancer are usually curable if they're caught early enough.

8.  Have regular smears/prostate tests

Women will usually be called once every three years for a smear test, and should make sure they attend when requested. Cervical screening probably prevents thousands of deaths each year. Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men and is second only to lung cancer as the biggest cancer killer. There are varying viewpoints about how often men should have a test and at what age. Testing should start at the age of 50, or at the age of 40 if in high-risk groups, such as black men or those with a father, brother or son with the disease. However, if you have any concerns go and visit your doctor.

9.  Monitor your bowel behavior

Any dramatic change in bowel habits such as an increase in constipation, or passing blood should be referred to a doctor immediately. It could prove be something as simple as piles (haemorrhoids), or worse case scenario could be bowel cancer, which is important to discover as early as possible.

10.  Drink more water

Most people are unaware that the recommendation is that the average person should drink aroundeight glasses of water a day. The human body is made up of between 55 and 75 per cent water, and is in need of constant water replenishment. An increased intake of water will greatly enhance digestion‚ nutrient absorption‚ skin hydration‚ detoxification and virtually every aspect of better health.

11.  Get more friends

Research suggests that friends help people live longer. Research in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health says that socializing with friends is beneficial. Good friends will promise to be there for you, and their presence can actually help you live longer, researchers say. Australian scientists said having friends around in old age can do more for life expectancy than having family members around, and that friends may encourage people to look after their health, and help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety at difficult times.

12.  No smoking

Everyone is aware of the potential catastrophic effect of smoking. It is better not to start at all, but the sooner a smoker quits, the better. Because the damage caused by smoking is cumulative, the longer a person smokes the greater the risk of developing a smoking-related disease, such as lung cancer or heart disease. Quitting not only saves money, but also has added health benefits. Within one year after quitting, the risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker, and within 10 years, the risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.

13.  Relax

Relaxation reduces blood pressure and helps reduce stress-related conditions such as depression. A relaxation technique such as yoga or meditation can help reduce stress levels.

14.  Get a pet

Owning a pet has a surprising amount of health benefits for the owner, according to a series of studies. Ownership of a pet, particularly a dog, means people are more active. Animals are known to reduce anxiety both from the actual physical comfort from stroking them, but also because they are a distraction and something pleasant to focus on. They are also good friends to many and provide a source of amusement, making us laugh.

15.  Exercise more

Exercise is known to reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity. It keeps joints, tendons and ligaments flexible, and contributes to mental well-being by helping treat depression, relive stress and anxiety. Exercise also aids better sleep. Even if you are pushed for time, exercise could be gained simply by walking up stairs rather than taking the elevator, or even try walking or cycling on shorter journeys rather than taking the car.

16.  Eat more fruit and vegetables

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can help ward off heart disease and stroke, control blood pressure and cholesterol, and prevent some types of cancer. It is recommended to eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

17.  Change job

Research suggests a strong relationship between how long people live and the nature of their jobs. According to UK Government statistics, for the period 1997-99, life expectancy at birth in England and Wales for males in the professional group was 7.4 years more than that for those in the unskilled manual groups. The gap between the social classes was smaller for women than for men, at 5.7 years.

18.  Have a happy marriage

Married people tend to have better health than unmarried people. For instance, married individuals tend to be able to have lower rates of alcoholism than their unmarried counterparts because they tend to offer encouragement, support, and protection from daily problems. They are also more able to handle stress better as a result. However, studies suggest that divorcing then remarrying actually increases the risk of dying prematurely.

19.  Be optimistic

People with a positive outlook on life can actually live longer. Researchers found that optimistic people decreased their risk of early death by 50 per cent compared with those who leaned more towards pessimism.

20.  Eat chocolate

Chocolate contains flavanoids and antioxidants which have positive health benefits. Flavanoids aid cardiovascular health, while antioxidants are believed to prevent or delay certain damage to the body’s cells and tissues. Dark chocolate is considered best as it contains more than twice as many antioxidants as a bar of milk chocolate, and has fewer calories.

Day 1: Check into Dune Eco Village & Spa (tel: 0413-265 5751) a sprawling spa resort on the beach with cottages which have names like Bangle House and Doll House, as well as an animal enclosure and an organic farm. Spend the day here and try a session of Watsu, a water shiatsu treatment done in a pool, meant to ease aches and pains. In the evening head to the secluded beach to watch the sunset, and relax with just surf and sand for company.

Day 2: Wake up in time for a spectacular sunrise on the beach. Take in French architecture, Pondy history and culture with a walk through the French quarter. You can also head to the Government Museum at Rue Romain Rolland, near Bharathi Park which houses an exquisite collection of Pallava bronzes, sculptures from Chola and Vijayanagar temples, terracotta figurines, French period furniture, paintings, pre-historic artefacts and other knick-knacks.Have lunch at Carte Blanche (tel: 234 3067), at Hotel De L'Orient, with French decor and Creole cuisine. After an afternoon siesta visit Aurobindo Ashram on Rue de la Marine. Wander around the serene premises amidst flowers, burning incense sticks and muted chants. The shops at the Ashram stock dresses, pottery and lovely handmade paper. Head back the hotel for dinner. Day 3: For a change of scene, take an early morning walk in the Botanical Gardens near the New Bus Stand, which is nearly 200 years old and has over 1,500 species from all over the world. In addition, there's a musical fountain, an aquarium, a toy train and a rock garden. Have breakfast at Cafe Rendezvous (tel: 233 9132) which offers 30 different kinds of omelettes. These walls have mixed bricks. After lunch at Au Feu Du Bois, only serving wood-fired pizzas, take a river cruise up to Veerampattinam beach and while away time till the evening. End the day with a meal combining French and Spanish cuisines at Le Club. Day 5: Pack in some eclectic activities. Spend the morning learning how handmade paper is produced at the Sri Aurobindo Paper factory. The factory store has an amazing range of paper and stationery. After lunch, head to Auroville for a taste of cheese at the La Ferme cheesery and watch how different varieties are produced. Dine at the quaint Satsanga (tel: 222 5867) which serves French and Italian cuisines before heading home.
My must do: Kalki Koechlin

Must shop: The Sunday Market is a great place to pick up some casuals. I manage to get good bargains here because, I think people are charmed by my Tamil.

Must eat: For South Indian food I usually go to Surguru on Vallabhbhai Patel Road. I can't get enough of the Masala Ghee Roast Dosa that they make.

Must see: The Repos Beach is something I never fail to visit.

Happy Diwali---2011

Fireworks Safety Tips
Diwali is thoroughly enjoyed by people of all age groups as they love the splendor and sparkle of fireworks. The earthen lamps that we light on Diwali night are generally placed on balcony and window ledges. So ensure that these are not near any flammable material like wood, cloth or paper. Usually, decorative lights are used on special occasions only and as such not much care is given to one's life. The electric lights should never be tied to any metal poles as any current leak can energize the pole and give a shock to anyone who touches the pole.

All accidents due to fireworks occur as a result of carelessness, negligence and ignorance. But these can certainly be avoided by observing some very simple precautions. All of us enjoy the pleasure of light and sound but when disaster strikes the injured has to bear the cross. If you're going to set off fireworks at home this year, please take a few minutes to read through the guidelines.

Store your fireworks safely: In a closed box, somewhere cool and dry, out of reach of children and animals and away from all sources of heat, until the time they're needed. Locked away is best. Don't keep the box under the stairs or in a passageway.

Pets hate bangs and flashes: Pets get very frightened on fireworks night, so keep all your pets indoors and close all the curtains to make things calmer. Remember it's not just your own fireworks that cause distress, so you may have to have your pets indoors on several nights when other displays are taking place.

Think ahead and be prepared: Before you start, make sure you'll be giving yourself enough room in a safe place to get to and from your box of fireworks while the display is going on. Have a full bucket of water handy for any emergency, and for putting used sparklers into. If you have the chance to get together with some other families, try to go to the home with the biggest open space and safest surroundings.

Never try to re-ignite the fireworks that don't light in the first instance. Never give ANY firework item to small children. Never throw fireworks at another person. Never carry fireworks in your pocket. Never shoot fireworks from metal or glass containers. Never experiment, modify, or attempt to make your own fireworks.

Watch what you wear: Loose clothing can very easily catch fire, and should not be worn near any fire or fireworks. Long dangly scarves can be risky too. If anyone's clothing does catch fire, follow the rule: Stop - Don't run. Drop to the ground. Roll to put out the flames.

One at a time please: You (or another adult that you choose) must be the only person letting off fireworks. Don't allow anyone else - especially children - to do so while your display is going on. Let the fireworks off one at a time (not lots at once) and don't rush. Light the tip of each firework at arm's length, using fireworks lighter or fuse wick. Stand well back immediately. If one doesn't go off, don't go back to it - it could still be live, and could go off unexpectedly on your face. Right at the end of your fireworks night, douse the 'duds' with lots of water, keep it soaking in a bucket of water. Never throw left over fireworks onto a bonfire.

Different fireworks mean different hazards: Read the instructions on each one carefully (by flashlight, never an open flame) and follow them properly. Rockets, for instance, should be launched from a rocket launcher, not from a bottle. Sparklers need careful handling - light them one at a time at arm's length; don't give one to any child under 5 years of age; make sure that anyone holding a sparkler wears gloves; and put each spent one into a bucket of water as soon as it's gone out.

No fooling: Putting fireworks in your pocket is stupid and dangerous. Throwing fireworks at people is stupid and dangerous and illegal; it's a criminal offense to do so.

Fireworks and booze don't mix: Drinking alcohol presents an added danger when there are fireworks and bonfires around. So don't drink during your fireworks display.

Watch that person: Keep children well away from fireworks, and never let a child handle or light one. Even sparklers can be dangerous if unsupervised! Do not give sparklers to a child under five. Make sure that children are aware of the dangers.

Don't light flying fireworks if there is a heavy wind.
Never take unnecessary risks while lighting fireworks, just to show off. Pool your pocket money and have a professional perform pyrotechnics for the benefit of many

Dos & Don'ts While Bursting Crackers

Do’s
  • Use fireworks only outdoor.
  • Buy fireworks of authorized/reputed manufacturers only.
  • Light only one firework at a time, by one person. Others should watch from a safe distance.
  • Keep the fireworks to be used at a safer place.
  • Organize a community display of fireworks rather than individuals handling crackers.
  • Always use a long candle/'phooljhari' for igniting fire crackers and keep elbow joint straight to increase the distance between the body and the crackers.
  • Keep two buckets of water handy. In the event of fire, extinguish flame by pouring water from the buckets. Every major fire is small when it starts.
  • In case of burns, pour large quantity of water on the burnt area.
  • In case of major burns, after extinguishing the fire, remove all smoldering clothes. Wrap the victim in a clean bedsheet.
  • The patient should be taken to a burns specialist or a major hospital. Don't panicky.
  • In case of eye burns, wash the eye with tap water for 10 minutes and take the victim to a hospital.

Don'ts
  • Don't ignite fireworks while holding them.
  • Don't bend over the fireworks being ignited.
  • Don't ignite fireworks in any container.
  • Don't approach immediately to the misfired fireworks.
  • Don't tamper with misfired fireworks.
  • Don't attempt to make fireworks at home.
  • Don't allow small children to handle fireworks.
  • Don't throw or point fireworks at other people.
  • Don't carry fireworks in the pocket.
  • Don't store firecrackers near burning candles and diyas.
  • Don't light firecrackers in narrow by lanes; preferably use open areas and parks.
  • Don't wear synthetic clothing; preferably wear thick cotton clothing.
  • Don't wear loosely hanging clothes; secure all clothes properly.
  • Don't apply any cream or ointment or oil on burnt area.
  • Don't drive recklessly while taking a burn victim to the hospital; a delay of up to one hour is immaterial.
Thus, awareness campaigns are launched so that fatalities and injuries caused by fireworks could be brought down. All mishaps due to fireworks occur as a result of carelessness, negligence and ignorance. Simple precautions can help avoid these mishaps.

May This Diwali be as bright as ever.May this Diwali bring joy, health and wealth to you.May the festival of lights brighten up you and your near and dear ones lives.May this Diwali bring in u the most brightest and choicest happiness and love you have ever Wished for.May this Diwali bring you the utmost in peace and prosperity.May lights triumph over darkness.May peace transcend the earth.May the spirit of light illuminate the world.

10 ways you know he's not the one

ou think you’re in love with him except you’re not as happy as Disney told you you’d be, is it possible that he’s not actually the right one for you?
His manners have left the building

If he rarely says please or thank you for the little things you do for him then he doesn’t deserve your attention. As your mother no doubt told you, ‘manners cost nothing’ but are a sure sign of respect and shouldn’t be abandoned by either party at any stage of a relationship.

He makes you feel like the green-eyed monster

Trust has to be earned and there’s nothing worse than losing your dignity by turning into the Incredible Hulk of insecurity and jealousy because your man makes it impossible to trust him. Sly, deceitful behaviour that leaves you questioning his intentions is not acceptable, put your foot down.

He’s tight with money

We consider ourselves feminists here at Handbag Towers and are happy to pay our way and share costs equally but if your man never offers to treat you or won’t talk about future plans that revolve around a commitment of the cash sort, ie holidays or shared rent, then it’s time to question where this is going.

He won’t meet your friends or family

This is a real worrier. Your friends are probably a huge part of your life, maybe even more so than your family and they’ve been there through thick and thin so you’ll be damned if you’re going to drop them just because you’re happily coupled up. Instead, you want to be able to enjoy the company of all of them, and yes, sometimes at the same time, but if he refuses to meet them then how committed is he to making himself a part of your life?
He makes you cry more than he makes you laugh

If you spend more time in screaming matches, locking yourself in the loo crying as he slams the door behind him for the umpteenth time, than you do making each other laugh and giggle then stop right now. Yes, even if the making up is explosive; it is possible to have amazing sex without the slanging match before hand. You just probably don’t want to with this loser.

You feel he can only see you at your best

If you jump out of bed at six am and dash to the bathroom to put your face on before he wakes up or three months in find you’re still taking more hours than a grown woman can justify on choosing an outfit that you think he will find sexy then you don’t feel comfortable enough in his company to let him see the ‘real’ you. If you’re afraid he’ll judge you and judge your badly then this guy is not the one for you.

Your friends despise him

If he has met your friends and strangely they don’t love him like you do warning bells should ring. We’re old enough now that if our mates don’t particularly like our boyfriend it’s most definitely a reflection on the way he treats you and not because they’re suffering from the kind of jealousy you might have got from girls in high school. Your friends just want the best for you and they can probably see the flaws that love or lust has blinded you to.

He laughs at your dreams

You talk about the book you’ve always wanted to write, or wanting to learn to play the guitar or go travelling and instead of supportive encouragement he belittles or even ( how dare he?) laughs then this guy is not someone you want on your team. Your partner should want you to be happy and content and should most definitely be your number one fan in whatever you choose to do with your life. If he’s not doing a good job make room for someone who will.

He’s not willing to satisfy you in bed

Leave right now. No, seriously, do it. If you’ve tried to talk to him about what works for you in the bedroom and he’s just not interested and not because he’s shy and embarrassed but because he just doesn’t care whether you’re having a good time as long as he’s getting his rocks off then girl, be gone, he’s actually a fourteen year-old boy masquerading as a man.

He’s not willing to make the next step

If you’re ready to talk about making a future together but he side-steps every leading conversation about moving in/getting married/having children then he probably doesn’t see himself doing any of those things with you. It’s a harsh truth but men that are genuinely in love are just as soppy as we are and will quite happily discuss baby names with you. Sickening, isn’t it?
